An accent adds just enough of a twist on something to take it from ordinary to special.  It’s the same exact thing with interior design.  Whether it’s an accent wall drawing the eye toward a focal point in a room or accent pillows adding a POP of color and texture to a boring sofa, accents should always have a place in your interior design plan.

Accent Walls

Your house should have a general color and texture pallet that naturally flows from room to room. This will be the foundation that the rest of your design elements are built on. It doesn’t mean your home has to be boring. One of the easiest ways to spice up a home is to add strategically placed accent walls. These are meant to pull attention when you enter a room and will instantly create a slightly different feel from the rest of an area. Accent walls can be colorful paint, wood, or tile.  The only requirement is that they’re special.

At Roughing It, we’ve been using Reclaimed Barnwood to create absolutely amazing accent walls. The patina, richness of color, and texture seem to bring a room to life. The age and character of the wood bring a sense of history and experience, even in a new home.

Accent Pillows

Is your room looking a little tired?  Are you looking for an easy and budget-friendly way to wake it up? You need to fluff up your pillow game. Accent pillows are the quickest way to change the look and feel of living rooms, bedrooms, and entryways. A couple new pillows can dramatically change a room and allow you to customize the color and theme for any season and/or holidays.

Art as an Accent

Every room has an empty space that’s begging for the perfect piece (or pieces) of artwork. Our designers love nothing more than helping clients find just the right thing for their trouble spots. It can be a beautiful painting that sets off the room or a collection of pottery that has the right texture and color. It can even be a collection of pictures or treasures grouped together in a unique and interesting way.
