Product Details

Swap the pitchfork for a canoe paddle and the farmhouse for a north-woods lake, and the most famous double portrait in American art becomes a pair of black bears. They hold the pose: upright, a little stern, the paddle planted between them like a family crest.

What keeps it from being only a gag is the painting itself. The gold evening sky, dark shoreline, and pine branch are handled with real care, so it reads as a landscape from across the room and a wink up close.

About the Line

Marilynn Dwyer Mason was born and raised in southwest Montana and has drawn since childhood. She paints in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pen and ink. Influenced by Philip Goodwin, John Singer Sargent, and Oliver Kemp, her work captures the nostalgia of early-twentieth-century outdoor life and the American West, including her Mason Bear series.

From her studio in Butte, Montana, her paintings are offered as giclée prints on canvas, hand stretched and set in birch bark and wild-harvested willow frames. Each frame is one of a kind.
