Product Details

Bull of the woods was logging-camp slang for the boss, the man nobody argued with. Dwyer Mason gives the title to the animal that earns it: a bull moose in the shallows, antlers spread wide and catching the last light.

This piece steps away from the bear series. The brushwork is loose and fearless, the palette cool blues, violets, and greens, and the moose is built from planes of color rather than outlines. It is closer to Sargent than to calendar art.

About the Line

Marilynn Dwyer Mason was born and raised in southwest Montana and has drawn since childhood. She paints in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pen and ink. Influenced by Philip Goodwin, John Singer Sargent, and Oliver Kemp, her work captures the nostalgia of early-twentieth-century outdoor life and the American West, including her Mason Bear series.

From her studio in Butte, Montana, her paintings are offered as giclée prints on canvas, hand stretched and set in birch bark and wild-harvested willow frames. Each frame is one of a kind.
