A sleigh ride was the winter thrill of the horse-and-buggy years, bells ringing and a blanket over your knees. Dwyer Mason keeps the sleigh, the bells, and the red and gold plaid blanket, and fills the seat with a grizzly and two cubs. The blanket flies out behind them.

She paints the mother's fur in soft copper and the evergreens in fast, cold strokes, so the sleigh seems to move through the picture. Warm without being sweet, it suits a lodge living room in winter.

About the Line

Marilynn Dwyer Mason was born and raised in southwest Montana and has drawn since childhood. She paints in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pen and ink. Influenced by Philip Goodwin, John Singer Sargent, and Oliver Kemp, her work captures the nostalgia of early-twentieth-century outdoor life and the American West, including her Mason Bear series.

From her studio in Butte, Montana, her paintings are offered as giclée prints on canvas, hand stretched and set in birch bark and wild-harvested willow frames. Each frame is one of a kind.
