Product Details

The title plays on the most famous bear in American public life, the one who spent decades warning campers about fire. Here a pair of black bears camp in front of a canvas tent, tending a small, careful fire with a frying pan, a red cooler and a picnic basket close at hand.

The joke is that they are doing it right. It is the classic camp scene of the sporting-magazine era, the brush loose in the smoke and pines and settled on the bears' patient faces.

About the Line

Marilynn Dwyer Mason was born and raised in southwest Montana and has drawn since childhood. She paints in pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pen and ink. Influenced by Philip Goodwin, John Singer Sargent, and Oliver Kemp, her work captures the nostalgia of early-twentieth-century outdoor life and the American West, including her Mason Bear series.

From her studio in Butte, Montana, her paintings are offered as giclée prints on canvas, hand stretched and set in birch bark and wild-harvested willow frames. Each frame is one of a kind.
